[Johnny's ears are working. It's clear when the guitar solo of Metallica's The Unforgiven starts playing from his Omni. His eyes. Not so much. And he scrambles around to try and find the device before he actually answers.]
Eagle Fang Karate.
Sensei Johnny Lawrence Speaking.
[This is the most professional he has ever sounded in his life.]
[Just as fast as he had pulled on the professional act it drops to something more casual. There's the sound of a crash as he leans back trying to be so smooth and casual that he falls over.]
[ Uh. It's a noise likely unheard, when the one his dad makes following his name is much louder in Robby's ears. His brow is furrowing. Was that a tumble? It sounded like a tumble. ]
Are you alright? [ He can't help but ask it, but it could've been nothing, so- ] I called 'cause I wanted to ask something. Your blood type.
[ ...it's a question that sounds fucking weird the moment it leaves his mouth. Yeah, dad - what's your blood type? ]
[He's not fine but he's not about to tell Robby that. He can totally handle himself here.
Wait- Why is his kid calling about his blood type? Johnny's parenting skills aren't tip top but he's been in enough fights to know where this question is going.]
Why are you asking that? Did you get hurt? Do you need a blood transfusion or something?
Because let me tell you my blood is weird as fuck here and I'll do it. But I'm telling you right now it's probably going to make you get super pissed off- So you tell that to the doctor before he puts it in you.
Assuming he's not trying to beat you with his weird little doctors hammer.
[ Dad? You know what, he doesn't want to know right now what he thinks doctors do (what they actually do? -- no, go away, distraction). He takes a breath. ]
I'm asking because people get bullshit because of their blood and I wanna know if you've been getting any of it. Going blind? Losing hearing? That kinda stuff?
[ Very very deliberately going for certain symptoms for a certain bloodtype? Your imagination. ]
I'm-- what? No one said that's how it works. [ Robby, revealing his Johnny Lawrence genes: is that how it works? ] Can we go back to the part where you said it's alright that you're blind?
[ How about that? ]
What's happening? [ There's the tiniest of beats. ] I heard some of your students live with you. They helping you out?
[ HE'S GOING TO THINK ABOUT IF FATHER-SONS SHARING WEIRD MAGIC BLOOD IS A THING LATER.
For now! What Robby can surmise from this call: His dad is doing the exact thing he expected him to do, and not have his shit together for sudden blindness. Which, fair, honestly. But it's the denial part.
It's also the crashing noises that makes Robby take a breath, and skip to the part of this call that misses out on the sarcastic call-outs. Instead: ]
I'll come stay with you 'til it's over. [ There's a pause, a moment where he thinks about everything else he could add, Or, until this; or, until that. ]
That alright?
[ He'll stick with that for now. Figure out the rest later. ]
[There's a pause as Johnny sort of rolls over on the floor. He can't actually believe what he's hearing here.
But it tracks, Robby had made the attempt to reach out to him after that house party. And even if things had gotten off track for them from there. Johnny had desperately hoped he could find a way to bridge that gap.]
You-
You want to come stay with me?
[He cannot hide the disbelief mixed with hope in his tone.]
[ There is a pause in him; one that wants him to take it back, change his mind. But, he has to give this a try. His dad doesn't remember everything he does, but didn't they still get somewhere? A chance.
Don't back out, he tells himself. But there are logistics, where he's wondering- ]
Is there room? I know you've got people staying with you. If it's easier for me to leave at night--
[ It's just an offer, not an attempt to go back on it; nothing hopeful in it, just Robby making sure. He didn't exactly stay long in that warehouse-slash-dojo to know much.
(But it won't be the first time he sleeps in some place like that, will it.) ]
[Johnny's willing to bat down these questions. He was freaked out but he was willing to give this a shot. Give them... A chance to get off on the right foot. If he could or had made steps forward with LaRusso in the future. He wanted to think that there was hope for him and Robby too.]
There's room. And even if not- We'll make room.
I know you're doing your own thing out there. But... There's always a spot here for you if you want it. And you don't have to feel like you have to stay here either.
[ Nonchalant, non-committal; keeping it easy for the both of them. They're both cool about it, no big deal. ]
I'll be over in-- half an hour? Just uh, don't try and find any beds the way you are. [ A sliver of a joke, there. ]
Oh, and there was this guy -- he said his omen was helping him get around. If you have one.
[ He knows everyone can technically have one, but does his dad bother with his? Will it actually be useful?? Who knows; Robby's just putting it out there. ]
[Yeah. Totally cool. Perfectly cool. It's not like the only time he's had Robby over was when he showed up with his drunk girlfriend. He totally didn't get into a karate fight with that girl's dad AKA his ETERNAL RIVAL the next morning or anything either.
...Yeah. [ Maybe -- maybe the omen wouldn't be as useful in this situation as he was thinking. But. Whatever. ] Okay, well. See you.
[ Poorly picked words Robby realises as he's turning off the omni, but too late!! Let's hope chaos doesn't reign by now between the journey from his place to Johnny's. He packs just a change of clothes for one night, but ends up adding in food (mostly snacks) into his bag than anything else, like he isn't sure if his dad will have much food, and you know what his roommate can do? Make things appear. Good stuff.
The trip there still takes him a minute, and he's feeling nerves himself, if he's honest. Especially once he's stepped outside the dojo-slash-warehouse, and remembering when he was last here; the reason he was last here, his eyes on Paul, and that twisted contradiction in his gut that wanted to hate him, fight him, and to concede before anything happened.
And now, he feels a contradiction to that. But he doesn't hang around and indulge in the feeling, moving into the building and starting to find the part that isn't dojo, into the part he didn't step into before. Looking for one (1) dad, and calling out - until he'll find whatever room he's in. ]
[The part of the dojo that wasn't a dojo was about as cozy as it could be. It was still very obviously an old warehouse but there was a bunch of second hand furniture that gave it a sort of homey look. There's also some old art work of scantily clad women set up along the wall, because of course there is.
Johnny can be found with his Omen trying to spread out a sheet over an old cot that he wrangled up when there were a few more people living in the warehouse. He misses the bed entirely.]
[ He wasn't one to judge living spaces. The LaRusso's living space was clean, new, money; and there were plenty of people like that, but never once was it him. You break something in a house like that, and it's noticed, it's an eyesore, all before it gets switched out. Except broken shit was his entire living experience, it was clutter, it was a carpet rarely vacuumed because his mom rarely cared and he didn't care if she didn't.
Robby sees this warehouse-adjacent home, and what he sees it: you could do a lot to it. You could leave broken shit to be future you's problem (because it'll always be future you's problem) and there's no expectations. There's something relaxing about it.
Or that could be the fact his dad can't see him.
But look, behold: said dad is doing exactly what Robby said he shouldn't. Okay, some of what he said not to (sorting out a cot), some of what he did (getting his Omen) to help. He's definitely not taking in the fact with anything other than exasperated disbelief. There's no tiny giddiness in seeing his dad take charge about him possibly staying over, because why would there be.
He puts the bag down by the wall and walks over to the cot, picking up the sheet with a glance at the omen. Wasn't thinking of saying at first, but he sighs, and: ]
Couldn't help yourself, huh. Tory made some food, --with her powers. Dunno what you've got. You know what you're going to do about classes?
[ He's taking over the sheet, or will try to, without bringing attention to it. Spread it over properly, get the corners where they should be and the fabric stretched out. Speaks evenly and asks the question evenly, like this is normal. ]
